How Long Will it Take to Get Your Fiance Visa?
Looking to Get Your Fiancé Visa?
So, you’re ready to apply for a fiance visa and now you’re wondering how long will it take to complete the process? The answer unfortunately is that it depends mostly on how long it takes you to complete your application and obtain an interview. The process normally takes around 6 to 12 months, but again all depends on how long it takes to complete the steps.
Step 1: Filing the I-129F Visa Form
First, the U.S. citizen fiance will need to file the I-129F Visa form, Petition for an Alien Fiance, with USCIS. To shorten the processing time, make sure that you have all of your information and documents together in your application. If not, USCIS will issue an “RFE”, short for “request for evidence”, which will add to the processing time of your application.
Step 2: Applying at the Embassy Interview
Once USCIS approves Step 1, the foreign fiance will then need to interview at a U.S. consulate or embassy. For information on the interview itself, check out helpful tips when preparing for your K-1 fiance visa interview. It can take anywhere from 4-8 weeks for the Embassy/Consulate to receive the Step 1 application materials from USCIS and set up the interview.
You will be notified when the Embassy/Consulate abroad is ready to process Step 2. Remember that if you are missing any information from your application, it can increase the processing time. Be sure to go through your application thoroughly and make sure you have included all of the required materials.
The best way to ensure your application is processed as quickly as possible to get your fiance visa is to properly prepare all paperwork in the application. Beyond this, it is best to consult an immigration attorney who can guide you through any questions you may have.
