What are the costs associated with applying for U.S. Citizenship?
Government (USCIS) Application Filing Fee*
- Application fee: $600 with some exceptions (see Common Questions)

1. What is the difference between an N-400 and an N-600 form?
The two forms are actually very different. The N-400 is the form used to apply for United States citizenship otherwise known as naturalization. If you are a green card holder and over the age of 18 then you qualify to apply for naturalization. For more information on the N-400 you can visit our U.S. Citizenship page here.
The N-600 form is used if you are already a U.S. citizen through birthright or through parentage. This means that you are already a US citizen because your parents were US citizens or because you were born in the United States. The N-600 does not require the complex process that is required for the N-400.
2. What are the special cases in which the price is $550 rather than $600?
The two exceptions that qualify for a lower fee are:
- If filing for an adopted child, the fee is $550
- If filing for a member or veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces, the fee is $0 (proof of service is required)
