1. What do I need to know? Who does this apply to?
Form I-131 is for non-U.S. citizens to apply for a reentry permit, a refugee travel document, (OR) advance parole into the United States. Each of these processes is a little bit different.
- Reentry Permit: Permanent Residents (green card holders) should apply for a Reentry Permit if they will be traveling outside the United States for an extended period of time (over six months is the general rule). Being outside the United States for too long tells U.S. immigration officials that you may not be permanently residing in the United States, as required by your immigration status, and could cause them to cancel your permanent residence.
- Refugee Travel Document: If your immigration status is Refugee or Asylee, you MUST apply for permission to travel outside the United States, using Form I-131. Also, if you received your Permanent Resident status based on your previous Refugee or Asylee status, you should apply for permission to travel outside the United States, using Form I-131.
- Advanced Parole: This travel document can be for humanitarian reasons (extreme circumstances to allow someone to enter the United States without a visa for a temporary period of time), or while an I-485 Application for Permanent Residence is pending. If you leave the United States after filing Form I-485 and before your permanent residence (Green Card) has been issued to you, you will be deemed to have abandoned your application, unless you have applied for and received Advanced Parole first. DACA recipients may also file for Advanced Parole to maintain their grant of deferred action while traveling abroad for important reasons, but not for vacation.

2. What is the process?
- Using Road to Status’s software, prepare your petition and use our instructions to gather the evidence you need to support your petition. Once everything is ready, you will submit it to USCIS for review.
- Once USCIS has received your application, they will send you a notice for a biometrics appointment where they will take your photo and fingerprints. They may choose to send you a notice for an interview as well, but this is not always the case. Once your application is approved, your travel document will be mailed to you at the address you indicated on your Form I-131
3. How long does the process take?
On average, it takes about 3 months to have your conditions removed after you have submitted your application to the USCIS, but processing times are always changing and may vary depending on your local office and on the type of application you are filing.
